- Son of Herbert H. Russell and Rachel Russell, of New Zealand and Torquay.
- Brother of Second Lieutenant Lawrence Dobre Russell who also served with the Royal Flying Corps and who died on 2 September 1916 of wounds received on August 26th.
- Served with the NZEF prior to transferring to the RFA, he had earlier been wounded on 8 March 1916 while flying as an Observer with 7 Squadron, RFC.
