| Biographical Notes: |
- Charles was the son of Helena Marian Barnard, of 201, Derwent St., Island Bay, Wellington, New Zealand, and the late Henry James Barnard. He enlisted in 1915 and was one of six sons who served.
- He is commemorated on one of the bells (donated by his mother Helena M. Barnard) of the Wellington War Memorial Carillon. The pamphlet published on the occasion of the dedication of the bells includes the following: 'The main ideas governing the gift and installation of the Wellington War Memorial carillon are that it shall be regarded essentially as a memorial to the New Zealanders who gave their lives in the Great War that it shall commemorate their deeds by the giving of special recitals on the anniversaries of the principal engagements in which they fell, and, the carillon being the greatest instrument in existence for the cultivation of the folksong and national and religious airs, it shall help to rekindle among New Zealanders the love of old England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and of their own land, and the ideals for which so many New Zealanders died - the triumph of right over wrong, and the establishment of peace and goodwill amongst men.' National War Memorial and Carillon, Wellington, New Zealand : dedicated Anzac Day, 25th April 1932, to the glory of God and to the memory of the New Zealanders that died in the Great War, 1914 to 1918, Wellington : Printed by Blundell Bros., [1933], p.6.
