Additional Information:
  • In 1909 the New Zealand government passed the 1909 Defence Act which created a territorial force recruited from Compulsory Military Training. The purpose was to have a body of men already trained in the event of defence of the country.
  • When Britain declared war on Germany NZ offered the British government an Expeditionary Force. Volunteers were called for from the Territorials. These volunteers were sent to camps at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin for training.
  • On 8 August 1915 New Zealand units led by Lt. Colonel Malone and his Wellington Regiment captured Chunuk Bair. Taking Chunuk Bair was the high point of the campaign for the New Zealanders. On 10 August, however , it was re-taken by the Turks. Like other actions in the general attack, the Chunuk Bair assault was a costly failure. (Source: New Zealanders At War by Michael King, page 127)
