- Son of John Thomas (Jack) Hazeldine and Agnes (nee Heslin); brother of Charles, Sarah, Margaret, Jessie, May Ellen (Molly) and Elsie
- He was chosen for the Brunnerton Brass Band and was chosen Canterbury Infantry Battalion brass band
- Family think that after the 2nd battle of Krithia he was puportedly shot by a sniper whilst going for water
- The original of the photograph that appeared in the newspaper after his death is held by family and was signed by James and sent from Addington Camp in Christchurch.
- Each year family make a special photograph decorated with poppies and lay it by the Cenotaph, in front of the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
