- Private Alexander was the son of David and Martha Alexander, of West Gore, New Zealand.
- He attended Gore School, Southland High School and Otago University where he graduated with a MSc with honours in geology and physics.
- Private Alexander was wounded in action during the August Offensive. He was evacuated off Gallipoli to Malta where he died of his wounds.
