Biographical Notes
  • Son of William Hort and Amy Levin (ne Fitzgerald).
  • Husband of Zoe Charlotte Levin (ne Johnston).
  • Brother-in-law of Captain Octavius Ralph Featherston Johnston, who was killed in action on 1 July 1916, at Fricourt, France.
  • Gained commission as Major on 21 November 1914 (Studholme 1928).
  • Major Levin was the Beach Commandant on Anzac Cove
  • "Was at School from 1889 to 1895. After leaving Oxford he joined the Militia, and was shortly afterwards transferred to the 1st Dragoon Guards. He left New Zealand with the 2nd Reinforcements, in charge of the mounted men, with whom he served for some time, afterwards being on Staff duty with Generals Russell and Birdwood. He had the misfortune to get wounded within an hour of the evacuation on December 18th, 1915, and died in hospital early on Christmas morning." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School])
