- McDonald was present with the baggage-guard from Middle Bosch in February 1900. He joined the Orange River Colony Provisional Mounted Police, Regimental No. 63 in Bloemfontein, May 1900, under Major Lorimer. (Stowers, p.153)
- Returned to New Zealand on the S.S. 'Orient'.
- McDonald also served in World War One, Regimental No.13/107.
- he died after a bicycle accident
